This painting just grew on the canvas
My inspiration began with a lovely cluster of rock oyster shells - Crassostrea glomerata - that I had gathered from the beach
I was musing on the nourishment that the live oyster provides - the clouds of minute spore put out into the water when reproducing provide welcome nourishment to the hordes of tiny sea creatures which in turn feed fish and larger sea creatures which then become food for humans
The Oyster itself is a rich source of food for birds and humans.
My mind then began to dwell on nourishment for the spirit as well as the body
I remembered how impressed I was by the strength of spirituality alive and well in Russia, in spite of years of repression of Christianity during the Communist rule
Painted in December 2000.
