Haulashore Island, just offshore from Nelson's busy Rocks Road, has not always been an island, once being the western end
of the famous Boulder Bank.
In 1906 a channel was blasted through the boulder bank to make safer route for shipping to enter Nelson's Harbour.
The island gained its name because, in early colonial days, small-medium sized boats were hauled up onto the sheltered shore
of the island for cleaning and repairs.
